Holes in the Drywall: When to DIY and When to Call a Handyman

September 8, 2026 DMR Maintenance & Repair LLC

Every house collects wall damage: nail holes from old pictures, anchor holes from a TV mount, a dent from a chair, or the classic doorknob hole behind a door without a stop. Some of these are easy weekend fixes, and some are worth handing off.

Small nail and screw holes are a good DIY job. A little spackle on a putty knife, a light sanding once it dries, and a dab of paint is all it takes. The trick is to keep the patch flat — overfilling leaves a bump that shows once it's painted.

Holes bigger than a couple of inches need backing. That means a mesh patch or a piece of new drywall, tape, and several thin coats of joint compound, each sanded smooth. Matching the wall's texture — knockdown, orange peel, or smooth — is what makes the repair disappear, and it's where most DIY patches give themselves away.

Call a pro for water damage. A stained, soft, or sagging ceiling means water got in, and the source needs to be found and fixed first. Wet drywall should be cut out and replaced, not painted over, or the stain and possible mold will come back.

DMR handles drywall repair from start to finish — patch, texture, prime, and paint to match. Send a photo of the damage to get a free estimate, or call (863) 722-6351.
